Today's post is about my first day at Starbucks. I had just completed the 24 hours of formal training. Orientation, Bar Skills, Register Skills, Selling Skills and Communicating Coffee. All of it was completed after hours at the Sunset Square store in Bellingham, WA. Every night we were done by 1am.
Anyway... first day. I showed up for my shift and wouldn't you know, the 2nd opener was "sick". Never having worked an actual shift before, I had no idea what I was in for. The assistant manager happened to come by and was a huge help at getting me a till to run by myself. Needless to say on a busy Sunday morning at the Meridian store in Bellingham... I was over my head. The customers were so gracious at accepting my "newbie-ness" and guiding me through the first three hours. The tip jar was never so full... nothing like pity tips.
Well, I figured if I could survive something like that then there wasn't much that could happen to make it worse... that was 15 years ago.
Have a great day!

Hi Pat--do you have an e-mail address? I am a reporter working on a profile of Starbucks for my magazine and would welcome a chance to get your perspective as a former employee. Thanks!
